National Bioethics Conference ...
Sama has been involved, as part of the women’s movement, in challenging the politics of population control and ethical violations in contraceptive trials. Sama believes that bioethics form an important basis for monitoring, creating pressure and to evolve ethical guidelines for critical areas of medical practice such as Assisted Reproductive Technologies, cost of health care, equity in access to drugs, etc.
Sama is a member of the organizing committee of the National Bioethics Conference (NBC), an initiative of the Indian Journal of Medical Ethics to establish broad, independent, participatory platform for ethics.
In November 2005, at the first conference on “Ethical challenges in health care: Global context, Indian reality”, Sama organized a workshop on “Perspectives in feminist bioethics on new reproductive and genetic technologies”. During the second conference in 2007 on ‘Moral and Ethical Imperatives of Healthcare Technologies: Scientific, Legal and Socio-economic Dimensions of Use, Misue and Research, Sama conducted a workshop on ‘“New” Reproductive and Genetic Technologies, Ethics and Women’, that explored the ethical dilemmas in this respect.
