Impact of hazardous contraceptives on women ...
Unveiled Realities - A study on women’s experiences with Depo Provera, an Injectible contraceptive
This study, conducted to document women’s experiences with injectables, was an outgrowth of Sama’s involvement in campaigning against these contraceptives. The research was carried out in a public hospital in Delhi, which had been providing women with Depo Provera, an injectable contraceptive, despite the injectable not being part of the Family Welfare programme. The study assesses the harmful and hazardous impact of the use of these contraceptives on the health of women and the procedures for screening, follow up and taking informed consent.
The research brought to fore the voices and experiences of women who expressed lack of information while being subjected to these technologies and analysed the politics of new contraceptive technologies that have an adverse impact on the health of women. The study has been useful in consolidating known facts and strengthening advocacy efforts against the use of Depo-Provera for women. Intensive campaign launched by women's group including Sama led to the contraceptive not being included in the Family Planning Programme.
