Campaign against the Two-Child Norm ...

Sama, individually and in association with other women’s and health groups, has been continually advocating against the two-child norm. By undertaking research on the norm in Madhya Pradesh and bringing out the broadsheet on the myths and facts about population, Sama gave voice to the concerns of those whose lives are directly and intimately affected by different population policies.

Based on the research, Sama carried out many dissemination workshops, press conferences and people’s tribunal with the affected Panchayati Raj representatives as well as the media, legal experts and other local groups in Madhya Pradesh. Sama has been signatory to various memorandums submitted against the two child norm to the then Union Minister of Panchayati Raj and also to the Prime Minister of India in 2005. Consequently, the two-child norm was revoked in Madhya Pradesh.
