Campaign against Sex Selection ...

Sama has been involved in various capacities in the campaign against sex selection in Delhi.

Sama has been involved in drafting recommendations for the Pre Conception & Pre–Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PNDT) monitoring task force; auditing of the PNDT records; conducting survey of clinics with ultrasound machines in Delhi and devising future strategies and action plan for advocacy. Being a part of the Citizens Against Pre-Birth Elimination of Daughters (CAPED), Sama has been engaged in vaious activities of the Delhi campaign and is also in engagement with the Ministry with regard to the regulation of PC&PNDT Act.

In 2006, Sama was a part of the group demanding action against the doctors who had been identified through a sting operation by a television channel as conducting tests for sex selection in Rajasthan. Sama, along with other organizations, followed up the issue within the state as well as at the national level. A joint memorandum was submitted to the Secretary of State for Heath and Family Welfare and to the Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare to put pressure for immediate action and implementation of the Act. Sama was involved in mobilizing organizations and participated in a Rajasthan state level rally in Jaipur and co-organized a rally in Delhi to protest against the abysmal implementation of the PC&PNDT Act and to lobby for its better implementation.

Sama’s publication, Beti Bojh Nahin, has played an important role in raising the issue of sex selective abortions in the country where the ratio of girl children has been dropping drastically.
